Fermin dedicated this race to:

Richard Dastrup Richard C. Dastrup passed away Sept. 30, 2011 with his wife Fran by his side at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. He was born March 21, 1932, to loving parents Doyle and Berniece in Provo, Utah.

Richard C. Dastrup was a graduate of Brigham Young University with a B.A. and a master's degree in vocal music from California State University. Richard's love and talent with music offered opportunity for him to touch the lives of many. He was a distinguished soloist, vocal director, vocal coach and beloved teacher. His opera experience included the Utah Valley Opera Company, performing in such operas as "Faust" and "La Boheme," three years as lead tenor with the Riverside Opera Company and two years with the Westside Opera. Richard has performed many concerts throughout the United States, Canada and Italy, including his performances as tenor soloist in Handel's "Messiah" at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony", Verdi's "Requiem" and Berlioz's "Requiem" with the William Hall Chorale.

In May 1987, he traveled to Rome to sing at the Vatican and was the tenor soloist in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" at St. Ignazio Cathedral in honor of Pope John Paul II. Richard directed such musicals as "Carousel," "Oklahoma" and "Fiddler on the Roof." For 25 years, Richard served as the vocal coach for the All American Boys Chorus. He taught at Fullerton College and San Clemente High School for 20 years. His talents & dedication to music was a tremendous influence to many of his students. He directed several albums recorded by the San Clemente High School choral groups and performed a beautiful solo on many of the recordings. He was the tenor soloist on the record "City of the King" with the Ralph Carmichael Orchestra and singers.

Richard had his first stroke about 20 years ago which took his voice from a high tenor to a baritone, as well as leaving him with a balance problem. A few years later he had another serious stroke which left him partially paralyzed and made it difficult for him to walk without a walker and also very hard for him to talk and sing. As the years went by it became even more difficult for him to walk at all and very hard to understand him. His dear wife Fran, became his interpreter since it became more difficult for him to talk let alone sing. Fran dedicated her life to her beloved husband Richard by taking such wonderful care of him and always managed to take Richard to church which was the highlight of his week.

Richard resided in San Juan Capistrano with Fran, his wife of 25 years. He is survived by his wife; brother D. Kent; five children, sons Richard Craig, John and Charles and daughters Randolyn and Michelle; two stepchildren, Karen and Ron; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Fermin dedicated this race to Ray Castaneda...see story below

"My name is Raymod Castaneda. As a young man right out of high school, in the mid 40's, I joined the Army. And after basic training I was sent to Japan in the Army of Occupation and spent a year in the Pacific. I am now going on 82 years old and I have always let a healthy lilfestyle. About 18 months ago I found out I had prostate cance and was quite surprised and shocked. With the miracle of medicine I managed to do well for the first 14 months. I have slowed down quite a bit but with the help and prayers of my family and good friemds like Fermin Camarena, I hope to continue my fight to live a comfortable and happy life. I thank Fermin for his inspiration and dedication and I will be rooting for him all the way in the traithalon."

The 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon was held on September 5th, 2010

2010 Disneyland Half Marathon

Fermin dedicated this race to 4 year old Mateo Florentino, who suffers from Autism.

Mateo is a Toy Story loving, 4 year old boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Thanks to early intervention services starting at the age of 18 months old, he is considered "high functioning" Autistic. Even with his progression where it is today, everyday is still difficult for Mateo and his family. Mateo has his really good moments, really bad moments and everything in between…daily. The family manages to survive his unpredictable meltdowns; especially with the help of his 9 year old sister, Aubriela.

Since Autism is such a wide spectrum there is always the need for continuing education, not only for Mateo and the whole family, but for the community as well. Mateo doesn't qualify for many state programs, and most insurance policies don't cover treatment for Autism, which is very expensive. To better focus on researching and providing the education Mateo and the family deserves, Mom stopped working her fulltime job. Even though the family is struggling, Mom is committed to ensuring that Dad, Mom, Sister and all extended family members and friends understand why Mateo "does what he does" or "acts like he acts". It is because he is Autistic.

Mateo will always be Autistic, however, together with the success of early recognition of developmental delays by Dad & Mom as well as continuing special education through the school district since the age of 3, don't be surprised when you meet this infectiously happy little boy and find yourself thinking "but he doesn't even seem Autistic!"
